We’re hiring: Ag & Water Desk seeks new Assistant Director to support editing, operations

This position contributes to editing and digital production, impact tracking and story distribution, and project strategy and administration. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on July 18, 2024.

The Mississippi River Basin Ag & Water Desk, an independent environmental journalism collaborative covering the U.S.’s largest watershed, seeks a part-time, remote Assistant Director to join our team. The Assistant Director works 20 hours per week on a flexible schedule to support the daily editorial and administrative operations of the Ag & Water Desk. 

The Assistant Director’s main duties are threefold: contributing editing and digital production; managing the distribution of our stories for free republication by news outlets across the country; and fulfilling administrative duties such as impact tracking and event planning. They are also a member of a three-person leadership team overseeing the strategic direction of the Desk.

The best candidates for this job will be detail-oriented and tech-savvy, with experience in editing, collaboratives, and/or environmental issues. We will strongly prefer applicants who live within the Mississippi River Basin, which covers about 40% of the U.S. (see a map here). This position will be a part-time, remote employee of the University of Missouri System at a pay rate of $25 to $45 per hour, depending on qualifications.
