Winter 2021: Newsrooms and Expert Journalists selected.

Spring 2021: Journalists apply for Report for America Corps Member positions.

Summer 2022: Journalists begin working in newsrooms.

For newsrooms, the application window opens on Monday, July 12, 2021 and closes Thursday, Sept. 30. Report for America reviewers will assess applications through October and schedule newsroom interviews via Zoom in October and November. They will announce winning newsrooms in early December. Then Report for America runs a competition for corps members. Host newsrooms will select among a slate of candidates Report for America chooses, and those reporters will start in selected newsrooms the first week of June 2022. Learn more about the Report for America process.

We encourage newsrooms to contact the Desk’s Executive Director Sara Shipley Hiles and Report for America Director of Recruitment Norman Parish to discuss how your newsroom may fit the project.

Expert Journalists will apply directly with the Ag & Water Desk. We anticipate opening those applications in August 2021. Journalists will be interviewed in October and November and announced in December. We will begin collaborating in 2022. Request an application from the Ag & Water Desk.

Potential Report for America Corps Members will apply between December 2021 and January 2022 and begin working in newsrooms in the summer of 2022. Learn more about applying for Report for America.

How long is the committment?

The commitment for both newsrooms and reporters is two years, with a check-in at year one.

Expert Journalists will have a one-year commitment that is renewable for a second year.
